People from all walks of life love seeing classic cars. And tens of thousands of them come to every Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show. Classic cars are reminders of the past, invoking fond memories of what once was. Of course, with the crowds comes a variety of personalities and a plethora of possibly unwanted situations. Some people don’t know the “etiquette” for poking around your prized possession. Being rude to passersby might keep people at bay, but that’s not what true car enthusiasts are going for. So how do you realistically protect your car from disrespectful onlookers while still coming across as warm and inviting at a car show?

Stage Your Car Prior to Showtime

Let visitors know ahead of time exactly what you intend for them to see and touch on your car so folks won’t go poking around where they don’t belong. Go ahead and pop the hood – you know people will want to see the engine. Open doors or the trunk to show off special features. Got a VW Type II? Slide the side door open to let everyone see the interior.

Use Signs to Your Advantage

Posting warnings, cautions, or disclaimer signs won’t make you look like a nit-picking jerk. It will just let people know that you’re the proud owner of a classic car. Onlookers may actually think that your car is extra special. An informational sign warning them about the Dos and Don’ts might give them a greater sense that they’re looking at something rare. Worst case scenario: they walk right past your display while rolling their eyes. Consider it a win, because you don’t want someone disrespectful around your stuff anyway.

Stay Close By

As much as you want to go check out the rest of the classic cars at the show, time your absences wisely. Leaving your car unattended for long spans of time means you might never know where mysterious scratches came from. Try to stay close to your car, particularly if you’re looking to sell it. Bring snacks and activities for yourself, and bring company – someone who can watch over the car while you run to get a burger. Of course, you can also use that break to explore the rest of the Car Corral!

Use Mirrors

Place mirrors on the ground around the car to show off the undercarriage and other special aspects of your vehicle. Mirrors allow your admirers to respect your hard work without rolling on the ground to get a look under your car. Mirrors help prevent onlookers from having to get too close to the car.

Carry Full Coverage Insurance

Classic car owners already know that having an insurance policy is important. But, before the big show, take a minute to double-check that your insurance is in full effect, and understand excatly what you’re covered for. With so much going on at car shows, there are bound to be distracted drivers and spectators. Make sure you’re covered if someone unintentionally bangs a fender or a Radio Flyer into your bumper.
