Kids, especially, are often more interested in their gadgets than having a real conversation… and they’re always looking for the latest trend in everything from clothes to hobbies. The last thing they’re likely to be interested in is a classic car.

Why is this so important?

Because today’s kids are going to be responsible for what happens tomorrow. We need future generations to be inspired by and to fall in love with classic automobiles. Otherwise, these amazing machines will become even more rare and, eventually (*gasp*) extinct. Think about. It would be such a tragedy to lose all of these vintage beauties.

You can help, though. It’s never too late to get your child’s motor running. Here are just a few ideas to get you (and them) going:

Get them started at a young age – From the very beginning, talk to your kids about cars. Tell them about your favorites, what makes a classic great, or how to tell the difference between different model years. They make tons of toys and model cars that your child can play with, too. You can often find a toy version of whatever is in your garage!

Ask for their help – Are you working on a project or restoring a classic? Get your kid into the garage with you. Ask for their opinion on everything from colors and style, to how they think the engine sounds. Feeling like they are a part of the building process can spark a love that lasts a lifetime.

Give incentive – Almost every teenager looks forward to having their first car. Start when they are just hitting their teens, and have them help you restore a classic as their first car. Not only will they learn that hard work can pay off, but they’ll feel a sense of pride over the final product… and, more than likely, your teen will take better care of the vehicle over time.

Visit car shows together – Taking your son or daughter to a car show can be great bonding time, especially if you don’t have much time to spend in the garage. You can show your kids what a great car really looks like, and you can make some great memories in the process.

Check out some drag races – Kids are all about speed these days, and showing them that a 1967 Mustang GT can outrun a new, souped-up Nissan Altima can help them realize that old doesn’t always mean slow. Of course, if you’re into VWs, then the Hot VWs Drag Day in Irwindale is a must!

Show your kids that everything they’re interested in can be found in a classic car. It’s got speed and shine, and it’s withstood the test of time.
