Bring generations together by restoring a classic car with a loved one.

You’ll never forget your first car. Especially if you were fortunate enough to score an American classic. And those who have can attest that there is nothing like spending the winter of your Senior year laying on the floor of an unheated garage with Dear Ol’ Dad, welding floorboards and replacing rusted-out quarter panels on your “new” 67 Mustang. Those rich kids driving around in the latest box of boredom just couldn’t understand the thrill of fine-tuning that 289 4-barrel and feeling the chest-shaking duel exhaust rumble to life. Top off the experience by adding a shiny new set of Cragar wheels and a lifetime of classic car love was set in motion.

Fast-forward a few decades. Now YOU are Dear Ol’ Dad — or even Grand-Dad — and the love has never waned. That first car has lead to history repeating itself as you share the thrill of classic cars with your kids and grandkids. Ford vs. Chevy debates are good-hearted fun for everyone and summers of classic car shows and parts swaps have become family tradition.

In a world where everything is disposable, it’s a real treasure to pass on an appreciation for the exquisite lines and fine craftsmanship found in a ’56 Bel Air, Fairlane Hardtop Convertible or Big Block V8 Dodge Charger. This pastime may have more importance than you realize. A discussion group during Monterey Classic Car Week stated that an “aging demographic” was among the “top threats to the classic car hobby.” About.com reported:

The average age of the historic vehicle hobbyist is 55. And 75% of the hobby is 46 years old or more. Social, economic and technical forces conspire to divert the interest of youths away from the automobile. If these trends are left unabated we will continue to see the hobby age, declines in the number of enthusiasts and the value of vehicles, clubs will shrink and support services will become scarcer as more enthusiasts exit the hobby than enter it.

So what can we do to keep the classic car hobby alive and kicking? Pass on your appreciation of classic cars to your family members. Spend a day at a classic car event with your son or daughter, or grandson or granddaughter.  Enjoy the brisk walk up and down the roads of parts for sale while sharing stories about how “your great-grandpa had a ’42 Plymouth Coupe just like this when I was only 12”. The stories and experience will stay with your grandkids forever… by the way, check out takeakidtoacarshow.com for info and activities especially for them.
