Contemplate this: is the Pomona Swap Meet more about finding those much needed parts, that incredible vehicle, or is it an excuse to spend the day hanging out with friends? Of course, it’s all of the options. We’ve all seen the vendors making lunch on their barbeques while showing off their fabulous parts to their customers. But, have you seen the guy grilling the ice to show off his product? That’s Mike McDonald and he’s actually doing that for a reason.

Mike has been in the auto body and collision business for many years and he knows his way around the underside of a vehicle. He’s also figured out that it’s important to know as much about the people and the products that relate to the underside of a car, as he does about the car themselves. For that reason, he’s spent a lot of time and effort going to shows like the Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association show (SEMA). And one of the things he’s taken away from these shows is that he’s really enamored with a product called Lizard Skin CI. So how does that relate to the barbecue, then?

Lizard Skin is actually two different products. One of these products is a thermal management spray and the second is a sound deadening spray. So when a coating of Lizard Skin’s thermal spray goes into places like your vehicles firewalls, on the ceiling of your vehicle, under the hood, or in the transmission tunnel, it will reduce the heat transfer by up to 30°, according to the manufacturer. So when Mike has that grill cranked up to 300° and the ice doesn’t melt right away, you can visually see just what Lizard Skin CI is doing. It’s keeping the heat away from the ice.

But, better yet, Lizard Skin is really designed to keep engine heat, sun and any other source of heat away from you. With a layer of Lizard Skin on the ceiling of your car, those sweltering summers won’t feel so unbearable. And add a layer under the floor boards and you can keep that exhaust heat out as well.

The second Lizard Skin product is the sound deadening spray which is demonstrated with the hotel front desk bell Mike has at his booth. You can spray a layer of Lizard Skim SC on the interior of your car (before you put all the upholstery) and you will notice a nice sound deadening effect. And Mike will show you how it works. He will spray that annoying hotel bell with a layer of Lizard Skin SC, which is the sound control product, and then ask you to ring that bell.

Mike’s one of the relatively new folks here at the Pomona Swap Meet, having been a regular for only about a year and a half. In that time, he, his grill and his bell, have already made quite an impression on people. But then, who wouldn’t like their car to be cooler inside and quieter to boot? Mike sells the whole package so you can do it yourself including the spray gun and all the Lizard Skin products. He’s noticed a lot of people eyeing him from swap meet to swap meet, before finally trying the product and those customers often return wondering why it took them so long to try a coating of Lizard Skin on their restoration project.

One of the things that Mike has noticed is that a lot of people see the way Lizard Skin looks and assume it would make a great bed liner for a pickup or panel truck. Well, it would make a great coating for the inside of a panel truck, which can essentially feel like a giant version of that hotel bell, but it’s not meant to be a surface protector that stands up to throwing your cargo in and out, so Mike’s will soon be handling bed liner spray as well.

Make sure to keep an eye out for Mike and his ice griddle and have him explain these products to you. You will find him at his regular spot on Road 27, Spaces 23 & 25. Or give him a call at (559)363-2458 and visit his website. You might not want to be grilling ice at the next swap meet, but you’ll certainly want to go down road 27 to see this cool sight.
